## How to get started

1. Download and install the latest version (1.18) of EarthCache Add-In for ArcGIS 3.0 and above, from [<mark style="color:blue;">here</mark>](https://skywatch-public-esri.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/arcgis-pro-addin/EarthCache1.18Pro3.x.esriAddinX).&#x20;

3. Activate your account through the link in your email and create password.
4. Use your new [<mark style="color:blue;">EarthCache</mark>](https://console.earthcache.com/dashboard/location)\* login to sign in to your EarthCache for ArcGIS Add-In.

Here's how to set up an account with SkyWatch and start using the EarthCache ArcGIS Pro AddIn

To fully utilize the power of the EarthCache ArcGIS Pro Add-In, you must register for a SkyWatch account. Here's how:

# System Requirements

System Requirements for EarthCache AddIn for ArcGIS Pro

**The EarthCache ArcGIS Pro Add-In** **is compatible with ArcGIS Pro 3.0+ and ArcGIS Pro 2.9. Both versions use different download files. See** [<mark style="color:blue;">**How to Get Started**</mark>](/#how-to-get-started) **for more information.**

Requirements to use the Add-In for ArcGIS Pro 2.9

* To use the EarthCache Add-In for the 2.9 version of ArcGIS Pro, an additional download of WebView2 is required. See [<mark style="color:blue;">Installation</mark> ](https://skywatch-arcgis.geomarvel.cloud/setup/pages/hjGsSiVhVVc7yCCCYdJH#download-webview2-if-using-add-in-for-arcgis-pro-2.9)for more details.

Storage requirements:

* Imagery downloads necessitate a considerable allocation of storage space. It is essential to ensure that an adequate amount of disk space is available on your computer prior to initiating the imagery download process through the Add-In.

Network requirements:

* Downloads and requests to the SkyWatch API can be time and resource-consuming. For optimal performance, please make sure that your internet connection meets minimum speed requirements for data downloads.

### Firewall exceptions

If your organization's firewall restricts URL requests from ArcGIS Pro, please contact your IT department to whitelist the following URLs:

# Installation

Here's how to install the Add-In after downloading it from ArcGIS Marketplace

1. Browse to the folder location of the EarthCache Add-in file (\*.esriAddInX) that you downloaded on your computer.
2. Double-click the file to open the Esri ArcGIS Add-In Installation Utility window.

3. To continue, click Install Add-In. The Add-In is copied to the default location and installed. A copy of the file remains in the location where you browsed to it.
4. If ArcGIS Pro is open, exit and restart the application. The Add-In is now available for use.

### Download WebView2 if using Add-In for ArcGIS Pro 2.9

If the Add-In is being installed for ArcGIS Pro 2.9, a download of WebView2 is required. You will see a message when logging in for the first time to download WebView2. # Sign in to EarthCache ArcGIS Pro Add-In

To use EarthCache Pro Add-In, you must sign in using your credentials

To use EarthCache Pro Add-In, you must sign in using your credentials. If you do not have an account, return to the [<mark style="color:blue;">Account Setup</mark>](/setup/account-setup) page.

If you forgot your password, return to [<mark style="color:blue;">console.earthcache.com</mark>](http://console.earthcache.com/) and select "Forgot Password". You should then receive an email with a link to change your password.

If you simply wish to change your password, login to your account at [<mark style="color:blue;">console.earthcache.com</mark>](http://console.earthcache.com/) and on the accounts page you can request to change your password.

To sign in to EarthCache in ArcGIS Pro, click on the EarthCache tab located at the top of ArcGIS Pro. Click on "Login".

Click on Login and you'll see a prompt to use your Skywatch credentials. Click "Continue" after you're done.

### ArcGIS Pro 2.9 Note:&#x20;

1. If you're signing into the Add-In on ArcGIS Pro 2.9, you may get a message asking to download WebView2. WebView2 download is required to use the Add-In. Follow the URL to download WebView2.
2. If you're unable to download the WebView2 file, we recommend adding the API Key from your EarthCache Account on the browser directly to the Add-In. Here's how:

   * Visit [<mark style="color:blue;">EarthCache Console</mark>](https://console.earthcache.com/account) and copy "Your API Key".
   * Switch back to ArcGIS Pro 2.9. In the top ribbon, click on "Project".&#x20;
   * In the menu that appears, click on "Options". Scroll down on the left to see "EarthCache Settings".
   * Paste the API Key you copied from the browser to the field under "API Key" as shown in the image below. Click OK, and you're signed in!

# View EarthCache Settings in ArcGIS Pro

Once you've logged in successfully, you can visit Options under the Project Menu

From this Settings view, you can set the Download Folder for your imagery files, and also see your API Key. The default location for Download is *C:/users/\<youruser>/Downloads/*


# Search Archive

Search the EarthCache archive for already-collected imagery that fits your needs

Data that has already been captured and stored by one of SkyWatch's data partners is called **archive data**. Archive data allows you to find information about the past state of your area of interest and monitor change over time.&#x20;

Click on the EarthCache Tab to open the Add-In ribbon. Then, click on "Search Archive". The search pane will open in your Project window, to the left of your Map.

## Explanation of Fields

### AOI Layer

:warning: *Before drawing your own AOI, it is highly recommended that you save and close out any editing sessions you are currently performing on vector data, as this tool will automatically save any open edit sessions*

Please make sure that your AOI polygon respects the required conditions given [<mark style="color:blue;">here</mark>](/manual/aoi-minimum-requirements).

To select a polygon layer from your Table of Contents as your input Area of Interest (AOI), click the dropdown under "Select AOI Layer". This dropdown will be automatically updated with any layer you add or remove from the Table of Contents.&#x20;

If you want to create a new Area of Interest that's not in Table of Contents, you can draw one yourself on the map, by clicking the Pencil icon next to "Select AOI Layer"

This will open Draw tools at the bottom of your active Map window

Click on the Map to draw your Area of Interest.

Once complete, double click on the map to finish drawing. The layer will be automatically added to the dropdown as EarthCache User AOI

### Resolution

Select the desired resolution for your search. Please make sure that your AOI area respects the [<mark style="color:blue;">requirements</mark> ](/manual/aoi-minimum-requirements)of the resolution that you choose.

### Minimum Coverage

It is generally recommended to use a value of 1% to return all possible results. If you are only interested in imagery that covers the entire AOI, then setting it to 85% or higher is recommended. The default value for Minimum Coverage is 80%.&#x20;

Once ready, click "Run". You will see a new pane open at the bottom called "EarthCache Search Results". Scroll to see all results categorized by Search ran, resolution and sensor/timestamp. Click "Expand All" button at top to expand all results, and click "Collapse All" to collapse them.&#x20;

You can filter your results by scrolling to the top and clicking on "Filter Results". You can filter by keyword in name, sensor, resolution range, maximum cloud cover (%), or minimum AOI coverage. Start typing into these fields and the search results will filter based on filter values.

Each result contains information about cost, area coverage, cloud cover, and resolution. If you want to see the imagery previewed on the map as a low-resolution .png, click "Preview in Map". The image will be added to the Table of Contents and appear on Map. Note that this preview image may take a moment to show up.

Scroll through the results and check the boxes for ones you want to add to this order. Then, scroll to the bottom and add a name to the order to easily identify it in your Order Dashboard later.&#x20;

You can also expand the "Add Tags" section to add text labels and values to this order. Doing this can make searching for results in the Order dashboard easier.

Once you're ready to place your order, click on the "Order" button at the bottom. You will be prompted to a popup that asks to confirm the total price of creating the pipeline. Click "Yes" to proceed.

Once the order is placed, the EarthCache Order Dashboard opens up on the left.

**Tip:** Depending on whether data was captured on a specific day, archive data may or may not be available over your area of interest. If data is unavailable, try expanding your search parameters to other resolutions, a more tolerant cloud coverage, or allow for a wider date range


# Order Imagery

In addition to searching for archived imagery, you can order new imagery for an Area of Interest

From the EarthCache tab in ArcGIS Pro, click on "Order Imagery". The "Order EarthCache Imagery" pane will open to the left of the active Map window.

### Output Layer Type

### Pipeline Name

Optionally, you can give your pipeline a name by entering text in the Pipeline Name field. This will make it easier to identify and recognize from your Order Dashboard.

### Start and End Date

Choose a start and end date for the pipeline you're requesting. The end date can be a future date.

### Interval Mode

Single:

* The search range will be the entirety of the date range. The maximum is 999 days.

Multiple:

* This breaks the range into multiple orders based on the days of collection. This is common for change detection and monitoring purposes. Here are some examples.
* Multiple - 30 days, June 1 - September 30
  * 4 captures - 30 days, 30 days, 30 days, 2 days
  * June 1 - June 30, July 1 - July 30, July 31 - August 29, August 30 - September 29th, September 29th - September 30th. Since 2 of those months are 31 days, there is a short interval added to the end.
* Multiple - 31 days, June 1 - September 30
  * 3 captures - (31 days, 31 days, 30 days)
  * June 1 - July 1, July 2 - August 1, August 2 - September 3, September 3 - September 30

### Resolution

Select the desired resolution for your pipeline. Please make sure that your AOI area respects the [<mark style="color:blue;">requirements</mark> ](/manual/aoi-minimum-requirements)of the resolution that you choose. For more info, please see [<mark style="color:blue;">here</mark>](https://support.skywatch.com/hc/en-us/articles/13372177880987-Maximum-and-Minimum-AOI-Sizes). The table below shows a summary of AOI size requirements.

### Mosaic On/Off

It is recommended to turn mosaicking on for tasking. Mosaicking will stitch together any products which provide partial coverage of the AOI. If this is turned off and 2 images are collected which each cover 50% (i.e. do not reach your coverage setting) no imagery will be returned.&#x20;

### Tasking Allowed

Tasking enables the end-user to request that a satellite collect imagery of the AOI during a certain time interval. Tasking data has a higher chance of data being collected, therefore is offered at a premium rate and includes minimum order sizes. This means you will be charged as if your area of interest was 25 km² (or larger if your area of interest is larger than 25 km²). Collection is not guaranteed but probable. Furthermore, tasking is enabled only for High and Very High Resolutions.

### Minimum Coverage (%)

This coverage value is for usable pixels. This means that it considers total overlap, as well as cloud percentage. If it were 5% clouds and 90% overlap, a 90% coverage setting would return no results. This should not be set 90% or higher as it greatly reduces your chances of getting imagery. You will be charged for the entire area of interest.

This value is default-set to 80%.

You can also expand the "Add Tags" section to add text labels and values to this order. Doing this can make searching for results in the Order dashboard easier.

Information about pricing (given in USD):

When Tasking is allowed, the following prices apply.

* High Resolution: $12/km²
* Very High Resolution: $30/km²

Furthermore, if you have multiple intervals set, this will reflect in the price. If there are 3 features being submitted, each one is $500 dollars, then the order will show 3 pipelines and $1500. If in addition there are 2 intervals, the order total will show 3 pipelines and $4500.

When ready to submit your order, click "Submit". You will see the following prompt. Click "Yes" to continue.

The EarthCache Order Dashboard will open to the left of the Active Map, where you can see the pipeline you just created.


# AOI Minimum Requirements

Your Area of Interest polygon must meet certain requirements before it can be used with Search Imagery or Order Imagery

All input Areas of Interest (AOI) must the following criteria:&#x20;

1. Feature must be a polygon in a shapefile or feature class. Features in other file formats will not be accepted!
2. Feature must contain less than 500 vertices
3. Must be single part features
4. Feature cannot contain holes/donuts
5. Must be valid geometries - contain no self-intersecting features

The size requirements for your input AOI when [<mark style="color:blue;">Searching the Archive</mark>](/manual/search-archive) and [Ordering Imagery](/manual/order-imagery) are as follows:

* Low Resolution: 1km² - 10,000km²
* Medium Resolution: 1km² - 500km²
* High Resolution: 1km² - 500km²
* Very High Resolution: 1km² - 150km²

When creating a new pipeline by [<mark style="color:blue;">Ordering Imagery</mark>](/manual/order-imagery), if Tasking is turned on, the following requirements and conditions apply:

* High Resolution: 25km² - 50km²
* Very High Resolution: 25km² - 50km²
* If Tasking is turned on, areas less than 25km² can be submitted, but will be charged at 25km². It is recommended to buffer to 25km² to maximize value.


# Order Dashboard

Easily view and edit your pipelines and orders on the Order Dashboard

To access the Order Dashboard, click on the "My Orders" button in the EarthCache ribbon

### Filter Pipelines in Order Dashboard

You can filter the pipelines that appear in your Order Dashboard by clicking the dropdown at the top of Dashboard and selecting the category to filter by, and then typing in a keyword to start the filter. You can filter by Name, Pipeline ID, Status and Tags.

Each row in the Dashboard represents an imagery pipeline in your account, created from Search or Order. Click on a row and you can see the results for the pipeline.

The results for a pipeline are categorized according to interval dates, status, created date, number of results, lowest and highest resolution. Click on a result and the row expands to show details for the result.&#x20;

You can click on "Quick View" to download the preview image file and view it in your active Map.

Click on "Analytic Data" to download the imagery .tif file and view it in your active Map.

Click on "Open in Explorer" to download the metadata JSON file and open the location in Windows Explorer.

Once files for the result finish downloading, a message will appear at the top-right of your ArcGIS Pro window. A green box will appear around the download icon for all downloaded files from this session.

Each imagery pipeline in your Dashboard is categorized according to status, name, created date, ID, interval, start and end dates and tags. Click on the column name headers to sort the table with the selected field.

### Controls for Pipelines

### Bulk Download

Instead of selecting results one by one to download, you can click on checkboxes next to each row and add it to Bulk Download.

Click the "Bulk Download" button at the bottom-left corner to start, and you'll be prompted with a similar message as follows:

Click "Yes" to continue. You will see a Bulk Download window open and download the files. Do not close this window, as it will terminate all pending downloads.

Layers downloaded using Bulk Download will not be added on-the-fly to Table of Contents in ArcGIS Pro. To add this data yourself, visit your EarthCache download directory and add the data to map. To view or edit the location of your EarthCache download directory, visit [<mark style="color:blue;">here</mark>](/manual/view-earthcache-settings-in-arcgis-pro).

### Upload Imagery to Cloud

If you've [configured Cloud Storage](/manual/configure-cloud-storage) in EarthCache, you will see a button in the Quick View, Analytic Data and Metadata columns to upload your data to your selected S3 bucket or Azure Blob Storage container. Click this button to start the upload process. You will receive a message in ArcGIS Pro upon completion of this task. You should now see the data in your selected cloud storage account.

# Configure Cloud Storage

Upload pipeline data directly from your Order Dashboard to an AWS S3 Bucket or Azure Blob storage container

Click on "Configure Cloud Storage" from the EarthCache tab.

This will open the Cloud Storage Configuration window where you can input your AWS S3 bucket settings or Azure Blob storage container settings. You can choose to input as configurations for as many S3 buckets and Blob containers as you want.

### S3 Bucket configuration

#### Note before beginning :warning:

EarthCache data upload to AWS S3 requires an existing configured bucket and access to an IAM role capable of writing to the bucket. The following hints are guidelines, SkyWatch is not responsible for security misconfigurations. You are responsible for all charges related to these operations.

#### Access Key and Secret Key

The Access Key and Secret Key for an IAM role can be found on the [IAM Console](https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/) by selecting 1) Users 2) \[IAM user name] 3) Security Credentials 4) Create access key -or- Show. Note: The IAM role requires a minimum of bucket write permissions. Please see the [Identity and Access Management In Amazon S3 Documentation](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/s3-access-control.html) for more information.

#### S3 Region:

The region where your AWS S3 Bucket is established. This is the region used for data upload by the EarthCache add-in. For additional information see the [AWS S3 Service endpoints documentation](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/general/latest/gr/s3.html).

#### Bucket Name:

The bucket where data will be uploaded. The bucket must be [created in advance](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/create-bucket-overview.html) - the EarthCache add-in will not create the bucket. The bucket name must be [globally unique and meet other name requirements](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/bucketnamingrules.html).

Enter an easily identifiable name for this configuration in the Configuration Alias field. This is the name given to this configuration that you can select from the dropdown on top.

### AWS Blob Storage Container configuration

EarthCache data upload to Azure Blob Storage requires an existing configured container and access to a Storage Account capable of writing to the container. The following hints are guidelines, SkyWatch is not responsible for security misconfigurations. You are responsible for all charges related to these operations.

#### Azure Storage Connection String

A [Storage Account](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/storage-account-create?tabs=azure-portal#create-a-storage-account-1) is used to link credentials to Azure Blob Storage containers, and the Azure Storage Connection String defines the account credentials and protocols. To create a new storage account and retrieve the Azure Storage Connection String, log into the Azure portal then select 1) Storage accounts 2) Create 3) \[consult with your organization on appropriate account settings] 4) Under the Security + networking heading, select Access Keys 5) Select the correct Storage account name 6) Show and Copy one of the Connection String entries. Please see the [Manage Storage Account Access Keys Documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/storage-account-keys-manage) for more information.

#### Container Name:

The container where data will be uploaded. The container must be [created in advance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/blobs/blob-containers-portal) - the EarthCache add-in will not create the container. The container name must be [globally unique and meet other name requirements](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/api/storageservices/naming-and-referencing-containers--blobs--and-metadata).

Enter an easily identifiable name for this configuration in the Configuration Alias field. This is the name given to this configuration that you can select from the dropdown on top.

Once you've configured your cloud storage settings for EarthCache, you can visit the Order Dashboard to upload your pipeline data to your S3 or Azure Storage container.


# Publishing Data

## <mark style="background-color:blue;">ArcGIS Image Server</mark>

### What can be published as an image service?

You can publish the following as an image service:

* Raster dataset
* Mosaic dataset

### Options for publishing depending on your setup

You have the following options for publishing image services depending on your software:

* I have ArcGIS GIS Server only.\
  Use the Catalog pane to publish the service. You can only publish raster datasets.
* I have ArcGIS GIS Server and ArcGIS Image Server.\
  You can use the Catalog pane to publish the service. You can publish raster datasets and mosaic datasets.\
  License:\
  ArcGIS Image Server is also required when publishing a map document containing a mosaic dataset or raster layer using the Mosaic function in its function chain. Without ArcGIS Image Server, the services created from these documents will not contain the mosaic dataset or layer.

### Publish an image service

In ArcGIS Pro, you can share selected raster dataset as web imagery layers to ArcGIS Enterprise. The default configuration allows you to view the dataset and its associated metadata. The privilege to publish server-based layers is required to share a web imagery layer. See [Web imagery layer](https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/3.1/help/data/imagery/web-image-layer.htm) for instructions on publishing imagery layer that references registered data.

Hosted imagery layers can be used to manage, share, and analyze raster and imagery data in your organization. You can perform analysis using tools and raster functions with hosted imagery layers in Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic. You can also manage large collections of imagery, and include imagery layers in hosted apps and maps. Hosting an imagery layer on ArcGIS Online is one way to share data with an internet audience if your own ArcGIS Server site cannot be made public. Maps, apps, and desktop map viewers in your organization can access your services from anywhere on the internet if you choose to allow it.

Publish a hosted tiled or dynamic imagery layer in ArcGIS Online by using the Create imagery layers window that guides you through creating an imagery layer. You can publish one or multiple imagery layers for supported data types.

To create hosted imagery layers, you must have [privileges](https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/administer/roles.htm) to publish hosted imagery layers and create content.

**Note:**

Hosted imagery layers are different from [raster tile layers](https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/reference/tile-layers.htm). Raster tile layers support visualization of imagery and raster data, but they do not support analysis. Hosted imagery layers allow access to the imagery or raster data, including the pixel or cell values across multiple bands, and multidimensional data.

### Create an imagery layer

To create web maps with raster and imagery data, and to share this data with internal and external users, publish your data as hosted imagery layers.

You can publish data as tiled or dynamic imagery layers, with one or multiple imagery layers, or you can mosaic several images as one imagery layer. You can also publish multiple images as an image collection, which allows you to query the resulting hosted imagery layer for the properties of individual images.

Both tiled and dynamic imagery layers support access to imagery pixel data and metadata such as raster attribute tables, statistics, and histograms. With tiled imagery layers, groups of pixels are processed as static tiles, and processing occurs on the client machine. With dynamic imagery layers, you can also use raster function templates as a custom renderer to perform analysis on the fly. All processing is done on the server side.

If you publish a hosted tiled imagery layer from JPEG source imagery, the WMTS capability is automatically enabled on the hosted tiled imagery layer.

## <mark style="background-color:blue;">Publish hosted tile layers from files</mark>

Tile layers published to and hosted on ArcGIS Online support fast visualization of large datasets using a collection of predrawn map images or tiles. Hosted tiles provide geographic context for your operational layers. For example, you can include tiles of streets in your neighborhood to provide a visual reference for the street signs in your feature layer.

Tile layers hosted on ArcGIS Online are useful when you need to expose a map on the web for visualization, but you do not have your own ArcGIS Server. They also allow you to share certain maps with an internet audience if your own ArcGIS Server cannot be made public. [WMTS is available](https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/manage-data/hosted-web-layers.htm#ESRI_SECTION3_3EC8661CA3394B51A99822B0E09B839B) for tile layers hosted on ArcGIS Online that are shared with the public.

You can publish a tile layer [from an existing hosted feature layer](https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/manage-data/publish-tiles-from-features.htm), or use any of the following methods to create a file in ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap, and use that file to publish a hosted tile layer in ArcGIS Online:

To publish a hosted tile layer, you must be a member of one of the following in your organization:

* The [default Publisher role](https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/administer/member-roles.htm)
* A custom role that has [privileges](https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/administer/privileges-for-roles-orgs.htm) to create content and publish hosted tile layers

When you publish from ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, or a tile package, a tile package file is added as an item in your content. Once you confirm that the tile layer functions, you can delete the tile layer package from ArcGIS Online to save storage space, but only do so if you are certain that you no longer need the tile package.
